5 Best Practices for Building Effective 2-Week Workout Plans

How to structure personalised workout plans that clients actually complete — and the software features that make it easier.

TrackHQ Team·28 March 2026

A well-structured workout plan is the backbone of any successful trainer-client relationship. But creating plans that are personalised, progressive, and achievable is harder than it sounds. Here are five practices we've seen work across the agencies using TrackHQ.

1. Start with a client preference assessment

Before building a plan, capture:

  • Goals: Weight loss, muscle gain, endurance, mobility
  • Available equipment: Home gym, full gym, bodyweight only
  • Target muscle groups: Full body, upper/lower split, specific focuses
  • Training frequency: How many days per week

TrackHQ lets trainers store these preferences on each client profile, making it easy to reference when building plans.

2. Use a 2-week progressive structure

Two weeks is the sweet spot for structured plans:

  • Week 1: Introduce movements, moderate intensity, focus on form
  • Week 2: Progress load or volume, increase complexity

This gives clients enough time to adapt without getting bored, and gives trainers a natural checkpoint to assess and adjust.

3. Build daily workouts, not weekly blocks

Clients don't think in training blocks — they think in days. "What am I doing today?" is the question. Structure your plans as daily workouts with clear exercise lists, sets, reps, and notes.

In TrackHQ, each day in a 2-week plan is its own DailyWorkout with individual exercise entries. Clients see exactly what to do when they open the app each morning.

4. Use groups for clients with similar goals

If you have multiple clients with similar goals (e.g., a "Beginners Fat Loss" cohort), create a trainer group and assign a workout plan to the whole group at once. This saves hours of repetitive plan assignment and keeps everyone on the same programme.

5. Track completion, not just creation

A plan that isn't completed is worthless. Make sure you're tracking:

  • Daily workout completion rates
  • Exercise-level progress (actual vs planned reps/weight)
  • Client session streaks

Use this data in your next check-in call to show clients their progress and adjust the next 2-week block accordingly.
